MK4 Golf / Jetta / Beetle 1.8T K04 Swap Inlet Pipe Installation Guide

Overview

Running a K04 turbo swap on your MK4 1.8T? The factory inlet pipe won’t cut it — it’s sized for the K03 and will restrict airflow and boost on a K04 setup. This guide covers installation of the Autobahn Autoworx MK4 1.8T K04 Swap Hybrid Inlet Pipe, which is purpose-built for K04 and K04-hybrid turbo setups on MK4 Golf, Jetta, and Beetle platforms.

Fits: VW MK4 Golf / Jetta / Beetle 1.8T with K04 or K04-hybrid turbo | Also fits MK1 Audi TT 1.8T

Tools & Materials

Before You Start

Confirm your turbo is a K04 or K04-hybrid before ordering. The K03 inlet pipe has a smaller compressor inlet diameter — using a K03 pipe on a K04 will cause boost leaks and compressor surge. The Autobahn Autoworx K04 inlet pipe is sized to match the K04 compressor inlet correctly.

Step-by-Step Installation

Step 1 — Remove the Factory Airbox & Inlet

Disconnect the MAF sensor connector. Loosen the clamp at the turbo compressor inlet and the clamp at the airbox outlet. Remove the factory inlet pipe. On K04 swap cars, the factory pipe may already be modified or replaced — remove whatever is currently installed.

Step 2 — Remove the Factory Airbox (if applicable)

If you’re running a cold air intake or aftermarket airbox, skip this step. If the factory airbox is still in place, remove the three mounting bolts and lift the airbox out of the engine bay.

Step 3 — Install the K04 Inlet Pipe

Slide the new Autobahn Autoworx inlet pipe onto the K04 compressor inlet. The pipe is designed to seat flush against the K04 compressor housing — no trimming or modification required. Route the pipe toward your intake or airbox connection point.

Step 4 — Secure All Clamps

Tighten the clamp at the turbo compressor inlet first, then secure the intake/airbox end. Do not overtighten — the silicone couplers need to seal, not deform. Snug plus a quarter turn on worm-drive clamps.

Step 5 — Reconnect MAF Sensor

Plug the MAF sensor connector back in. Ensure the sensor is seated fully — a loose MAF connection will cause rough idle and incorrect fueling.

Step 6 — Test

Start the engine and let it idle. Listen for boost leaks (hissing under throttle). Take a short test drive and check for boost response. Log a pull with VCDS or similar to confirm boost targets are being hit.

Notes on K04 Swaps

  • A K04 swap requires supporting mods: upgraded fuel injectors, high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP), and a K04-specific ECU tune. The inlet pipe alone will not make power without the full supporting setup.
  • If you’re running a hybrid K04 (K04-015 core with K03 housing), verify the compressor inlet diameter before ordering.
